Question

I have a question for those of you who might be out there reading. I'm interested in trying to grind my own wheat berries to make my own flour for bread. Do I really have to spend 400 dollars on a machine? I'm not too keen on doing that. Can't it be done by hand? I'm going to look around and see if I can find a source for some wheat berries.

Thanks!

Hi Busy Bee - If you buy a Country Living Grain Mill you will still be grinding by hand - it's not automated. But there are much cheaper ones available, although maybe not as good. Sharon Astyk has a post on it somewhere on her blog. Good luck!

I visited a very rural part of Maine a few years back and this Acadian community uses a lot of buckwheat. Anyway - there was one family that basically ground all the buckwheat produced in the area into flour. My point is, if you can find an area specialty mill, you may be able to track back to the actual farms and they may be willing to sell you a small amount before they send the rest of their harvest to the mill.
